PROFILE

SHINTARO EGASHIRA

Affiliation :KLAMP STUDIO

When I was in elementary school, I used to borrow NARUTO manga from my friends to read it. I also recorded the anime and watched it multiple times. Being able to work on that piece as an adult is a very fortunate thing. Moreover, this time, it's on the stage of a sculpting competition that I had admired when I was aspiring to be a sculptor. With Yamauchi-san and 'KLAMP STUDIO' on my shoulders, "If I'm going to participate, I'll do it with all my might and win." This is my path in sculpting!

INTERVIEW

Please tell us why you became a figure sculptor.
During my university days, forming a group with my friends and participating in events was the trigger. (Araki-san, who formed a group with me for this competition, is participating, and it's quite emotional for me personally.) I loved toys from a young age and collected things like bottle caps. Since I majored in sculpture in college, when I thought about how I wanted to live after graduation, I decided to become a figure sculptor, something I had always loved.
Please tell us why you decided to sculpt your particular character.
The character Jiraiya is known as the "Pervy Sage" but is also recognized as one of the legendary three ninjas with remarkable skills. He is like a parent to Naruto and also his mentor. I love his presence and personality, he is someone I admire. I want to be an uncle like him! On a more serious note as a sculptor, I thought about the use of space, such as with his hair, cloak, and scrolls, and thought that it could be well used with this character.
What specific part of your work would you like people to pay attention to this time?
As is the case with any of my sculptures, I consciously focus on posing, density of information, differences in texture, silhouette, expressions of hands and legs, and the way shadows fall, ensuring it looks cool from any angle. This time, I made the face appear different from the left and right. Anger from one perspective, and a smile from the other. I wanted to incorporate Jiraiya's character in that. The scrolls are wrapped with real paper, which I used in the sculpture. I believe it adds expressions and a persuasiveness that can only come from real materials.
